The story of Em began in 2014, when Patrick Lin, a 2nd generation Chinese-Vietnamese Brooklyn boy met Ly Nguyen, a small town Vietnamese girl from Khanh Hoa province, in Saigon, Vietnam. A child of boat people, Patrickโs family had a carved out a small niche in the produce industry, sourcing tropical fruits from Southeast Asia and importing them into the United States. Patrick was importing Dragonfruits, Lychees, and Longans from Vietnam when he met Ly; over the course of a year Patrick would fly back to Vietnam at every opportunity to see her. Not having had the opportunity to taste Lyโs cooking, Patrick jokingly remarked that he would have to try her cooking if they were to get married. Ly took the comment seriously and made Patrick a bowl of Hu Tieu, a Vietnamese-Cambodian soup noodle dish with origins in the Chaoshan region of China where Patrickโs grandparents were originally from. The two are now married and Lyโs Hu Tieu is the signature noodle soup at Em, featuring a pork and seafood broth, special cut pork ribs, quail eggs, chives, cilantro, and scallions.
Also on the menu at Em is Pho Ga (Chicken Pho), featuring fresh locally sourced chicken, cilantro, scallions, and al dente pho noodles. Em also features Banh Mi sandwiches, made with locally sourced bread, house made pate, and Vietnamese mayo (also made in house). Not to be missed are the Vietnamese style smoothies featuring some of the freshest fruit around due to Patrickโs stint in the fruit business.
